Brits get salt shakers, onions and toilet brushes stuck up bums as NHS cases spike

Patients really are a pain in the bum for the NHS – because they keep getting things stuck up their backsides. Medics are trying to get to the bottom of a sharp rise in the number of botty ops they are having to carry out.

Figures show they have more than doubled from 78 in 2016 to 184 in 2021. The objects removed, officially known as “rectal foreign bodies”, included a toilet brush, a vacuum cleaner attachment, a saltshaker and an onion.

An NHS spokesman said: “If people have a problem they should come forward for care regardless of any precarious positions they may be in.

When it comes to issues like this typical NHS pathways still apply.” In County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, doctors recovered a whopping 14 sex toys.
