An Iraq veteran who was shot in the face has defied the odds thanks to Help for Heroes. Simon Brown, 40, lost his left eye when he was targeted in an ambush near Basra in 2006.
He was in a coma for 17 days and needed 12 operations that lasted a total of 100 hours. Simon was left with just 20% of the vision in his right eye.
Doctors feared he would never return to anything like a normal life, but he has proved them wrong. Simon, now a Help for Heroes ambassador, said: “I was fortunate to survive the injury I had. “And since then, training and support has helped me establish a life.
I’m back in full-time work and, even though I’m 40 and blind, I’m still playing rugby. “I basically realised there is another life after you have a severe injury.
