Blundering gravediggers using a JCB dug up an ancient green space by mistake, a council has admitted. Three learner contractors wrecked the "unspoilt gem" in Frome, Somerset, after being told to dig a practice grave.

They managed to dig up a green space next to the cemetery, however, Somerset Live reports. It happened in Easthill Cemetery, Mendip District Council said.

The beauty spot has been the subject of a dispute over its future, and campaigners recently managed to convince the council to pause plans to build 77 affordable homes on the site.
