Scientists have created a massive family tree that links around 27 million people. The ancestral chart, created by a team in the UK, goes back tens of thousands of years and is thought to the biggest ever made.

It's hoped the effort will help boffins understand more the evolution of the human race. The jumbo family tree could even help push forward medical research by helping to identify genetic predictors of disease.

Principal author Dr Yan Wong said: “We have basically built a huge family tree. “It is a genealogy for all of humanity that models as exactly as we can the history that generated all the genetic variation we find in humans today."[It] allows us to see how every person’s genetic sequence relates to every other.” The study from Oxford University combines modern and ancient genomes, giving never-seen-before detail about how people all across the world are related to each other Human genomes are the complete set of DNA found in a person's body, containing all the 'instructions' for how it will develop. They have been collected by scientists from hundreds of thousands of people over the past century, and some can be traced back to tens of thousands of years ago.

But it's only now that biological analysis has advanced enough to allow scientists to make a bigger 'map' of the routes these genomes — and the human carriers — have taken through history.
