BBC legend Dame Joan Bakewell has revealed she's been diagnosed with cancer. The journalist, 89, announced on Tuesday she was told she had colon cancer during a routine examination.

It is understood she was operated on before Christmas. She said: "I’ve always been optimistic because I caught this cancer early on, and within a week I was in hospital having an operation." The heartbreaking diagnosis comes after her sister Susan died from breast cancer at the age of 58.
