Jurgen Klopp has gradually transitioned several Liverpool academy products into crucial first-team stars, and under-18s star Oakley Cannonier could be the next to make the step up.Some Reds fans may recognise that name from somewhere but are unable to figure out why, as Cannonier played a starring role in the Reds’ Champions League glory in 2019.
He was the ball-boy that promptly returned the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold so that he could quickly deliver a cross to Divock Origi and complete Liverpool’s historic 4-0 victory over Barcelona – winning 4-3 on aggregate. However, Reds fans have another reason to remember Cannonier’s name as he is one of the brightest talents in their academy.
The striker has scored 20 goals so far this season in the Under-18s Premier League, justifying why he was awarded a professional contract at just 17 years old.Cannonier’s style has been likened to Harvey Elliott and Diogo Jota given that he is a smaller, nippy forward that is a lethal finisher but also has the versatility to adjust to different positions along the frontline.Klopp has brought Elliott into the Liverpool first team this season and the England under-21s star has seamlessly slotted into the team, adding a spark of creativity and flair in the no.10 position.
Cannonier will certainly be hoping that he is the next youngster to be given the opportunity to shine in the Premier League by Klopp. The Leeds-born forward headed to Kirkby academy aged 11 having spent some time with Manchester City.
