After years spent on glossy magazines promoting a buy buy buy ethos, Melanie Rickey has opted to pare back her wardrobe and buy ethically Back in the early noughties when I worked on weekly fashion magazine Grazia, the mantra was ‘Get It Before It Goes!’ – in other words, buy now before it sells out.

Our remit was to give news and shoes equal weight. While one page would cover a political crisis, the next would be telling you the best jeans to buy this season, why they were better than the pair you bought last season, and, hell yeah, why not buy another pair!

My job was to tease out the Next Big Thing based on the runners and riders of the day – was Chanel hotter than YSL? Was Topshop this week’s high-street destination of choice?
