Four new snow and ice warnings have been issued for most of the UK following the coldest night in almost two years. Drivers and pedestrians should expect travel delays and hazardous conditions on untreated roads or pavements.

Two separate Met Office ice warnings cover much of England and Wales as rain-slicked surfaces are expected to freeze from Wednesday evening and there could be some wintry showers.

The agency has issued a snow and ice warning for Scotland and a separate snow warning for Northern Ireland, saying as much as 5-10cm (2-4ins) could fall on higher ground.

It comes amid fresh warnings that a new Beast from the East could bring extreme cold and heavy snow to the UK within a fortnight.
