If 2024 is the year American voters will experience a sense of déjà vu at the ballot box, it’s also likely to go down as the year that fans of indie genre cinema will feel it at the box office. From Sundance to SXSW, a surprising number of films have had fun with the concept of time, whether in terms of history literally repeating itself (Timestalker, Omni Loop, Desert Road) or presenting new angles on the same set of events (Little Death, It’s What’s Inside, and, to a certain degree, even the animated kid’s film 10 Lives).

The real story begins long before you know it in Desert Road, a very smart, trippy chiller that plays with the conventions of survival horror and takes them in a wholly unexpected and, ultimately, really quite moving direction. Making her directorial debut, Shannon Triplett shows a sophisticated grasp of genre dynamics, with a bold use of space — a stretch of the Mojave Desert doubling for Death Valley — that proves more and more gripping as the film’s mysteries unfold. At which point, its boundaries begin to blur, slipping between horror and sci-fi in a way that recalls a hypnotic blend of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s The Endless and Herk Harvey’s Carnival of Souls.

Very obviously trying to emulate the DIY approach of producers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, Michael Felker’s lo-fi mind f*ck “Things Will Be Different” is both a fascinating debut and somewhat derivation of the filmmakers’ body of work. Clearly influenced by the Benson/Moorhead aesthetic and style, and sometimes slavish to their approach in a way that makes the film feel fairly familiar, this tiny, one-setting film may bring up more questions than answers.

The film stars Adam David Thompson and Riley Dandy and premieres March 11 as part of the festival’s Midnight selection. Marking Michael Felker’s feature directorial debut, “Things Will Be Different” follows siblings Joseph and Sidney, played by Thompson and Dandy, who are on the run from the law.

Disney+ dropped a new trailer for Loki Season 2 and the god of mischief is trying to understand what is happening around him.

The first trailer for the second season of Marvel Studios’ Loki, released Monday morning, has quickly hit a new milestone with it becoming the biggest online trailer debut ever for any series on Disney+ with 80 million views. The new season of Loki debuts on October 6. Season 1 remains Marvel Studios’ most watched series on Disney+.

Katie Reul editor Tom Hiddleston is back and ready for more mayhem in the official trailer for Season 2 of the Disney+ original series “Loki.” The trailer sees Hiddleston reprising his titular role as the god of mischief, sharing the screen with returning actor Owen Wilson and new cast member Ke Huy Quan. Set after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” the series will continue to follow the antihero as he works with the Time Variance Authority to track down superhero variants stoking chaos in different timelines of the multiverse. Wilson reprises the role of Mobius M.

A book of movie reviews from an alternate dimension is set to beam down to Earth during this year’s Fantasia Festival. Filmmaker and artist Pat Tremblay is launching the new collaborative book “Terror in the Ailien Realms: Transdimensional Horror Movie Posters & Their Film Reviews” on July 28 at the Fantasia Festival. The debut event will include a live reading from some of Tremblay’s 50 collaborators. The book is now available for pre-order on his website. Tremblay explains the book’s concept in a press release announcing the project: “Drawn by the deep nostalgia of roaming video rental stores to find cool movies to watch by judging what its VHS box’s artwork would entice or beguile, filmmaker & artist Pat Tremblay has created a series of horror movie posters with the assistance of AI. He then proposed to talented individuals within the horror movie scene to write imaginary reviews for them. The result is a captivating mixture of styles, ranging from the enigmatic and alluring to the outrageously hilarious. The dimensional doors to the AIlien Realms have opened, and you can now read what horrific and crazy films this AI world has created, for better or for worse!”

Disney+ will launch season 2 of Marvel’s Loki on October 6. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige announced the date Tuesday during Disney’s Upfront presentation, where he also introduced first-look footage of the upcoming season. New episodes will air weekly.
