UK to sizzle in four more heatwaves this summer after last week’s historic 40C scorcher

Forecaster Brian Gaze, of The Weather Outlook, said: “After the record heat, four more spells which people would call heatwaves are forecast this summer. “There is a good signal for very warm conditions around 30C this coming weekend, and then mid-August and late August are expected to reach over 28C in the South.“There’s a good probability of 35C highs in August, with heat from Europe and north Africa likely to reach Britain again.

And another 28C spell is expected in September.”Parts of the country may see scattered showers on Monday, which will come as a blessed relief after being left parched by this month’s extreme heat.Swathes of the South and East of England have had less than 1mm of rain so far this July, according to Met Office data.By contrast Laghouat, an Algerian town on the northern edge of the Sahara, has enjoyed 5mm of rainfall.Met Office chief executive Penny Endersby said: “Our attention is turning to drought and when we might see any rain – and we’re not seeing any significant rain coming up.”This month is now forecast to be Britain’s hottest July in 256 years, with some eastern areas on the verge of being classified as desert.Only 1mm of rain is expected in these regions over the rest of the month, with 2mm to 8mm in most other parts.The Environment Agency says one in three rivers are now “exceptionally low” and some reservoirs are half-empty.READ NEXT: Mum of playboy.
