Chelsea owner Todd Boehly reportedly lodged an improved bid to buy the club just minutes before Friday's 9pm deadline, according to The Telegraph. The American tycoon, who owns a portion of the LA Dodgers, has emerged as the frontrunner in the race, particularly after pledging to seal the takeover before Chelsea's next Premier League match against Brentford on April 2.

Boehly had reportedly already submitted an offer of around £2.5bn, but his consortium - which features the likes of Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss, PR guru Barbara Charone, Times columnist Daniel Finkelstein, and Cain International CEO Jonathan Goldstein - upped their bid in the 11th hour. The official figure of the new bid hasn't been made public, but it's understood that new proposals were made which offered guarantees around club funding and investment - as well as the promise to take charge before the Brentford game.Raine Group, the American merchant bank overseeing the sale, has stressed the need for a quick, trouble-free sale, which needs to be green-lighted by the Government and the Premier League, which puts Boehly and his group firmly in the driver's seat.Bids from Saudi Arabia and Turkey crumbled at the last minute, while questions have been raised over the investors behind the bid made by Lord Sebastian Coe and Sir Martin Broughton, who have so far remained anonymous.CHELSEA FANS!
