Thousands of tenants are facing eviction from Monday as a ban on homelessness comes to an end in England and Wales. The emergency ban, which was introduced in March to protect those financially affected by the pandemic, will end on August 23.
It means landlords will be able to take tenants to court and ultimately force them out them if they cannot pay their rent. An estimated 227,000 adult renters in England – around 3% of all private renters – have fallen into arrears since the start of the pandemic, putting them at risk of losing their homes from Monday, according to research by the housing charity Shelter.
In Manchester alone, mayor Andy Burnam has warned that homelessness could reach 1930s levels in the coming months. Shelter said
