The duo have been signed on loan until the end of the season along with Burnley goalkeeper Lukas Jensen, while midfielder MJ Williams has joined on a permanent basis from Blackpool.
The quartet form part of eight signings the Trotters made over the past month. Both Maddison and Afolayan are out of contract over the summer at their respective clubs.
