Former Bolton Wanderers attacker Marcus Maddison has joined non-league side Darlington.

Former Bolton Wanderers loanee Marcus Maddison has had his contract at non-league Darlington cancelled by mutual consent.

Newcastle United but made a name for himself at Peterborough United, where he made over 200 league appearances over a six-year stint with the Posh.However, injuries have hampered Maddison's career, so much so that the midfielder is currently signed to semi-professional side Spalding United, just two years after leaving Peterborough.The midfielder needs career-saving knee surgery, and has reached out to his supporters on Instagram as he has set up a donation page in order to fund his operation.Due to his injury problems, Maddison quit football completely after a short loan spell at Bolton Wanderers, but the midfielder has changed his mind, and wants to give his career a fighting chance with surgery.Maddison claims that the cost of the surgery is £3,000 and if he is unable to have the operation then he will be unable to run again, clearly marking the end of any return to football.On his Instagram page, Maddison said: "Hi guys this post is reaching out which is hard for me to do but I have nowhere else to turn. After a year out sorting myself out mentally this operation on my knee is my last hurdle, without it I will never run again never mind play football."To those who don’t know me or my journey, My name is Marcus Maddison, I am 28 years old and was a professional football player until last year when my mental health took hold of me.
