Philip Wright, AndoverPut a piece of kitchen paper or a cotton wool pad beneath the stain, then soak another piece of cotton wool in meths and dab it on the mark.
You could also try spraying on hairspray (which contains alcohol). Or Dr Beckmann’s Stain Devils Ballpoint Ink and Felt Tip Remover, 50ml for £2.50 from supermarkets, is worth a try.
Then, wash the shirt at the highest permitted temperature (check label) with a scoop of stain remover added to the detergent – Vanish Gold Oxi Advance Stain Powder, around £7, works well.
Repeat as necessary, and don’t tumble-dry the shirt before you have got out as much of the stain as possible.I clean my wooden chopping boards by rubbing them with halved lemons dipped in salt.
