Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor“The Night House” production designer Kathrin Eder jumped at the opportunity to work on David Bruckner’s new supernatural thriller, since the project represented an opportunity for her to flex her creative muscles.The blueprints of the house would also feature heavily as part of the storyline.In the film, Rebecca Hall Hall plays Beth, a young widow still reeling from her husband Owen’s (Evan Jonigkeit) death. She’s now alone in their isolated home that sits on a lake that Owen built for them.Optical illusions and creepy windows imply there is something sinister at work as Beth experiences the supernatural.It was up to Eder to find a location and built Owen’s dream home that makes the perfect haunting.

“Don’t go into the woods,” altogether too many characters have been warned through the annals of spooky literature and cinema, only to do so anyway, but Rebecca Hall has no choice because she already lives there in The Night House. Director David Bruckner clearly relishes the tropes of the horror genre and everything that comes with them. Honestly, though, we’ve been down this dark and woodsy path so many times that, no matter how many scares and shock cuts can be squeezed out of this crafty little thriller, this is a tree that’s long since been shorn of most of its leaves.

Hitting theaters next week, David Bruckner’s “The Night House” is a psychological horror with all the dials cranked up to 11, an unsettling exploration of grief and mortality that matches the intensity of that subject matter with brutal jump-scares, nerve-rattling sound design, and enough menacing ambience to keep your stomach in knots.
