Tesco workers will have to scrub stores themselves from next month after the supermarket giant sacked around 2,000 cleaning staff.Shopworkers are being asked to take over many of the cleaning responsibilities for branches, as the firm looks to maintain hygiene standards despite having less staff.The supermarket chain asked staff in 1,920 smaller Tesco Metro and Tesco Express to take on new tasks from August 24.These include cleaning floors, shelves and fridges, as well as break rooms and toilets.Tesco currently has 3,635 shops in Britain and Ireland, employing 320,000 people, as well as 2,933 shops overseas.The move to sack some 2,000 cleaners comes despite the coronavirus pandemic heightening fears about hygiene standards in shops.Tesco.
