The sinkhole is said to have formed over the site of a former crypt that was not filled in properly.Grant Gardens was opened in 1914, sitting above a former cemetery believed to hold up to 80,000 bodies, including slavery abolitionist Thomas Raffles who died in 1863.Memorials and structures from the graveyard have since been removed but the graves themselves remain intact underground.The appearance of the sinkhole prompted shocked residents to post on social media, with some calling it "scary" and "eerie".Shirley Hand, who recorded the video, said she could feel the ground sinking from underneath her feet and had to get off the grass quickly before more of it collapsed into the old crypt below."It was really eerie looking down.
