Backed by Brazil’s Dezenove Som e Imagem and Globo Filmes in tandem with France’s Good Fortune Films and Germany’s Sutor Kolonko, the loosely mystical narrative tells two disparate relocation stories fused by longing, grief and a rousing aesthetic.

Fresh off the recent announcement that she would make her feature directorial debut with “Color Your Hurt,” the actress-turned-filmmaker will next be getting behind the camera for “Ash Beneath the Current.” The film is slated to go into production this summer after Thorne completes post-production on “Color Your Hurt.” Based on a story by Thorne that she adapted alongside Leaf Lieber, “Ash Beneath the Current” will be shot at Tuscany Film Studios in Italy, the new facility opened by Andrea Iervolino.

K.J. Yossman Antoine Fuqua is set to direct a feature documentary about Nelson Mandela, Variety has learned. Provisionally titled “Troublemaker: The Story Behind the Mandela Tapes,” the doc will use newly discovered audio interviews with Mandela himself to deliver an “honest, accurate and definitive depiction” of the man who remains a global symbol of justice, hope and universal human dignity, according to a press release.

Alex Ritman Kim Kardashian is set to both executive produce and feature in an upcoming docuseries about Elizabeth Taylor. Commissioned by the BBC, the three-part documentary — given the working title “Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar” — is coming from the Oscar-winning “Searching for Sugar Man” production house Passion Pictures, behind the recent Sundance hit “Super/Man” about Christopher Reeve.
