STEVEN Spielberg has added in multiple black characters to his Hollywood adaptation of West Side Story. The veteran director has written in a new main role, Ade, who had to be played by a black actor and went to Broadway star Curtiss Cook.
Curtiss, 39, who trained at a London drama school, said it was an important update to a story and reflective of the time it was set in New York in the Fifties.
He told The Sun: “It’s a new character that Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner decided to add, and rightly so I think because in 1957, in New York City, there were a lot of black people walking around. “But unfortunately when they created the original version there weren’t a lot of black people in it.
