Don't wait around for updates - sign up for our daily football email newsletter today!Former Chester City defender Spencer Whelan has died at the age of 49, the National League club have confirmed.Whelan racked up more than 200 appearances for Chester in the 1990s, scoring eight goals.The centre-back started his career at Liverpool as an apprentice, before joining Chester on a free transfer after not being offered a full contract upon turning 18.He started off at the club playing predominantly at right-back, before Colin Greenall and Mark Came's departures saw him moved to central defence and named captain.Whelan remained a regular at the Deva Stadium for the next three years, until injury forced him to miss the start of the 1998/99.
