South Ayrshire's bid to become a county-wide 'city' is unique among the 39 areas vying for the title.Three bids from across the UK, and for the first time in British Overseas territories, will be named cities as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations next summer.South Ayrshire Council's decision to seek city status for the entire authority area was the only bid of its kind – with other areas taking a more traditional approach by seeking the award for a town.However, with no limitations to towns and the symbolical nature of this particular type of city status, South Ayrshire opted for a leftfield approach.The only comparative bid was Medway in Kent.
