The poet laureate, 57, on spending the day having drawing competitions, listening to The Fall and mowing his lawn I try to stay in bed as long as possible.

It helps distinguish Saturdays from a weekday. Then I have a cup of very strong tea. Eighteen months ago I was having heart palpitations and the doctor advised me to stop drinking coffee; I was better immediately.

In lockdown our family unit is me, my wife and daughter. Sue [Roberts] is head of BBC Radio Drama and spends most of her time on Zoom calls.

Emmeline, 20, is home from Oxford University, where she’s studying English, and is composing poetry [she’s a slam poet] and doing Zoom lectures.
