Salford Red Devils boss Richard Marshall took the positives from his side’s 29-6 defeat to defending champions St Helens – most notably the performance of debutant Elijah Taylor.
Salford conceded five tries but the game hung in the balance in the second half when Ken Sio’s score cut Saints’ lead to seven points.
Yet Kristian Woolf’s side then racked up three more tries from Mark Percival, Kevin Naiqama and Alex Walmsley to add to first-half scores from Tommy Makinson and Regan Grace to seal an ultimately comfortable win.
Marshall was encouraged by his new-look team’s display after handing debuts to new signings Taylor, Danny Addy, Harvey Livett, Jack Wells and Declan Patton.
