Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died at the age of 87, the Supreme Court has announced. She died due to complications of metastatic pancreas cancer and was surrounded by her family at her home in Washington DC.
Justice Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton in 1993 and served more than 27 years on the Court - becoming a legal, cultural and feminist icon.
Her departure could dramatically alter the ideological balance of the court, which currently has a 5-4 conservative majority, by moving it further to the right.
Just days before her death, Justice Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughter Clara Spera, saying: "My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed."
