Atletico Madrid’s players in their Champions League quarter-final defeat by Manchester City was “embarrassing”, according to Rio Ferdinand.City progressed to the semi-finals of the competition 1-0 on aggregate after holding Atleti to a 0-0 draw in the Spanish capital on Wednesday night.
But the result was overshadowed by ugly scenes in the closing stages, which were sparked by the actions of the home side. Atleti defender Felipe was sent off after picking up a second yellow card in the 91st minute for kicking out at Phil Foden following a meaty challenge on the touchline.
In the following melee, Stefan Savic tried to manhandle Foden off the pitch, headbutted Raheem Sterling and pulled Jack Grealish’s hair without being sent off.
There was more to come after the final whistle, with the Spanish police having to rush into the tunnel at the Wanda Metropolitano to keep the peace.
