Relaxing lockdown too soon risks a second Covid-19 spike in the North, experts warn. The Prime Minister is said to have ordered ministers to speed up plans to ease restrictions in a bid to prevent millions of job losses.

But the mayors of Liverpool and Manchester fear it is too soon and with too little notice as infection rates in the North West increase.

Liverpool Mayor Steve Rotheram said: “Not everything that’s in the best interests of London is in the best interests of elsewhere.” Sage epidemiologist Prof John Edmunds said: “If we relax then this epidemic will come back very fast.” It comes as the crucial R value – the rate the virus is transmitted – teeters on a knife-edge.
