tensions in Eastern Europe.The Russian President made a televised speech at just before 3am UK time on Thursday morning where he said that Ukraine was to be "demilitarised and de-nazified" as a result of the action, and accused Western powers of "crossing a red line".Moments later footage on social media emerged from the Ukranian port city of Mariupol, located 30 miles from the border with Russia, appearing to show plumes of smoke rising in the aftermath of explosions.Explosions were also reported in Odesa and the capital city of Kiev after the conclusion of Putin's speech, which came at the same as world powers pleaded with Putin to "give peace a chance" at an emergency UN Security Council meetingVladimir Putin's military have ventured beyond the pro-Russian separatist regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, defying western powers and putting Europe on a bloody warpath.Just before 11pm UK time yesterday, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Putin declined an invitation to last minute talks, adding that an offensive against Ukraine had been approved.

US intelligence sources revealed around the same time that Russia had closed off civil airspace on the northeastern stretch of the border, paving the way for air support to back the invasion.Reports followed that runways at Kharkiv, Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia airports in Ukraine were being blocked by tractors in a desperate bid to stop Russian aircraft landing with more troops.Guardian journalist Luke Harding, who is out in Ukraine at the moment, described the mood as "grim" shortly before midnight as news of the imminent invasion spread.
