A superintendent for Avon and Somerset Police has explained why the force didn't intervene when protesters tore down a statue of Edward Colston and threw it into the river.

The bronze memorial statue of the 17th century slave trader had stood in Bristol city centre since 1985 and had previously been the subject of an 11,000-strong petition to have it removed.

This weekend during a Black Lives Matter protest, triggered by the death of George Floyd, the statue was torn from from its plinth with ropes before it was dragged to the harbour and thrown over the railings.

With huge crowds gathering to watch and film the event, superintendent Andy Bennett spoke out to explain why the police didn't intervene while it was taking place.
