Winter Olympics figure skater, 15, fails drug test as substance confirmed by officials
Olympics figure skater aged just 15 has failed a drug test, the International Testing Agency (ITA) have confirmed.Kamila Valieva helped the Russian Olympic Committee to gold in the team event on Monday but has since received a test result from the Russian Figure Skating Championships on Christmas Day.Her sample returned positive for trimetazidine, a banned heart medication, on Tuesday, which prompted an automatic ban from the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA).Valieva successfully appealed that and was then allowed to continue competing at the Beijing Games, but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have now lodged an appeal of their own. They want the matter to be "expedited as quickly as possible" with the teenager set to compete in the women's single event next Tuesday. After announcing the failed drug test, the ITA released a short statement on the matter. It read: "The IOC will exercise its right to appeal and not to wait for the reasoned decision by RUSADA, because a decision is needed before the next competition the athlete is due to take part in (Women Single Skating, 15 February 2022)."Want to be on the ball with all of the latest football news?Well then sign up for the brilliant Daily Star football email newsletter! From the latest transfer news to the agenda-setting stories, get it all in your email inbox - don't miss a thing. It only takes a matter of seconds.Simply type your email address into the box at the top of this article and hit 'subscribe'.And that's it, job done.

Swedish ice hockey star channels 'inner Alan Shearer' with neat header at Winter Olympics
Alan Shearer’ to make a cheeky header during his side’s defeat of Latvia in their first game of the 2022 Winter Olympics.Winger Max Friberg was lining up for the Swedes in their Group C encounter with Lativa, with both teams harbouring hopes of winning the gold medal.Friberg was the furthest player forward for Sweden with 11.33 minutes remaining of the second period when the puck was launched forwards. It was too high for the Frölunda HC star to bring down with his stick, despite him being 1.79 metres tall, so he employed a novel method to get the puck back on the ice. After the puck was played forward from deep on Sweden’s left, Friberg jumped up and headed it into the centre of the rink.Unfortunately for Friberg, none of his team-mates were far enough forward to capitalise on his header, with Latvia mopping up easily. While his fellow Swedes were unable to anticipate it, Friberg’s header delighted supporters watching on.And some even compared the 29-year-old to legendary Premier League striker Shearer. How many medals do you think Team GB will win at the Winter Olympics? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section...“Has Sean Dyce seen this?” one fan asked.“Alan Shearer like flick on that,” another tweeted.“Man Utd scouts on high alert,” a third joked.“Lovely little near-post flick on,” a fourth said.Friberg helped Sweden to survive a comeback from Lativa to secure a win in their opening game of the Beijing Games.Anton Lander’s goal as well as a double from Lucas Wallmark had given the Swedes a commanding 3-0 lead midway through the second period. But Latvia hit back through powerplay strikes from Renars Krastenbergs and Nikolajs Jelisejevs to send the game to a nervy finish. The Swedes were able to hold on though and

UK’s richest young entertainer competed in Winter Olympics - but finished last
Olympic Games.Mae was seen as one of Britain’s most impressive musical stars, and her talent now doubt reaped reward, with the Sunday Times rich list estimating her fortune to be around £32 million in 2006.Remarkably though, the violinist put her musical attributes on hold as she looked to take on a career in skiing with aims of competing at the Winter Olympics.Despite holding British citizenship after being born and raised in London, Mae was born to a Singaporean mother and a Thai father, and her father’s nationality would prove to be her route to becoming an Olympian. After outlining her plans to compete at the Games, the musician opted to represent Thailand as an alpine skier, rather than Team GB as she felt this gave her the best chance possible to qualify for the Sochi event in 2014.In 2010 she told The Telegraph: “I am British, but realistically there is no way I could represent my own country, but because my natural father is Thai, they have accepted me.”Is Mae's story one of the great Olympic stories? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.Four years later she found herself on a plane to Russia in order to compete at the Sochi 2014 Games, as one of two Thai skiers competing in the giant slalom event.Despite achieving her dream though, it is more than fair to say that things didn’t go to plan for Mae.The skier ended up finishing 67th out of 67 finishers on the Sochi slopes, but still kept her head held high following her last place performance.Following the race Mae positively said: “It’s so cool. You’ve got the elite skiers of the world and then you’ve got some mad old woman like me trying to make it down.

Winter Olympics descends into chaos as team refuses to leave changing room
Winter Olympics descended into absolute chaos.Players remained in their dressing room while they waited for the Russian Olympic Committee's (ROC) Covid-19 test results to come through following a delay. The ROC skated onto the Wukesong Sports Centre ice for the introductions but were left standing on the blueline as the Canadians failed to join them. When Canada eventually came out for the game, players on both sides took the ice wearing masks due to "safety and security concerns" as things got off to a chaotic and confusing start.ROC players, however, removed their masks for the third period while the Canadians continued to wear theirs.Canada went on to register a routine 6-1 win but despite the result being a forgone conclusion, the contest was far from uneventful."Russia's results from this morning weren't back in yet," said Canada forward Natalie Spooner."I know in the past few days they've had a few positives and we just wanted to make sure their results came back and we were safe to play."Want to be on the ball with all of the latest football news?Well then sign up for the brilliant Daily Star football email newsletter! From the latest transfer news to the agenda-setting stories, get it all in your email inbox - don't miss a thing. It only takes a matter of seconds.Simply type your email address into the box at the top of this article and hit 'subscribe'.And that's it, job done.
