Kamila Valieva is sad Winter Olympics story but British sport has its own doping problem
Winter Olympics. But perhaps British sport should get its own house in order before people single out one person from Russia who has tested positive for the banned angina drug trimetazidine.I'm not condoning what Valieva has done, because she shouldn't be allowed on the ice in Beijing. But we have more pressing issues to deal with on our own doorstep, following the bombshell revelations from former Rugby League stars Ollie Wilkes and Jamie Acton that they were involved in widespread doping throughout their careers. Those who follow the sport have spent years marvelling at how these supreme athletes put their bodies on the line week in, week out to cope with the demands of what is a brutal business. But in one fell swoop, Wilkes and Acton have called into serious question the integrity of an entire sport, tarnished the good names of all those who remain clean and left the game's rulers facing more questions than answers.Wilkes, who captained Scotland, revealed he was taking illegal substances at the time he secured a 'dream' move to Wigan, claims coaches used to encourage stars to go missing when UCAD testers turned up at clubs, and said one team-mate even injected himself in his car en-route to a training session.Acton, meanwhile, took to social media to accuse Rugby League of going to great lengths to keep drug use a secret. The timing of these damaging admissions and allegations is horrendous. The new Super League season began last weekend with fireworks and fanfare, while a Rugby League World Cup will take place on these shores in the autumn.Wilkes is now being lauded in some quarters as some sort of brave whistleblower.

Winter Olympics figure skater, 15, fails drug test as substance confirmed by officials
Olympics figure skater aged just 15 has failed a drug test, the International Testing Agency (ITA) have confirmed.Kamila Valieva helped the Russian Olympic Committee to gold in the team event on Monday but has since received a test result from the Russian Figure Skating Championships on Christmas Day.Her sample returned positive for trimetazidine, a banned heart medication, on Tuesday, which prompted an automatic ban from the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA).Valieva successfully appealed that and was then allowed to continue competing at the Beijing Games, but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have now lodged an appeal of their own. They want the matter to be "expedited as quickly as possible" with the teenager set to compete in the women's single event next Tuesday. After announcing the failed drug test, the ITA released a short statement on the matter. It read: "The IOC will exercise its right to appeal and not to wait for the reasoned decision by RUSADA, because a decision is needed before the next competition the athlete is due to take part in (Women Single Skating, 15 February 2022)."Want to be on the ball with all of the latest football news?Well then sign up for the brilliant Daily Star football email newsletter! From the latest transfer news to the agenda-setting stories, get it all in your email inbox - don't miss a thing. It only takes a matter of seconds.Simply type your email address into the box at the top of this article and hit 'subscribe'.And that's it, job done.
