Packing a top-notch Spanish cast, “The Redemption,” (“La Deuda”) opens Spain’s Malaga Festival this March 14 with a drama tensed by large thriller elements from the near get-go.

Jamie Lang Global production, sales and distribution outfit Filmsharks has picked up international sales rights to the Spanish dramedy “Samana Sunrise,” starring box office mega-draw Luis Tosar (“Cell 211,” “Sleep Tight”). FilmSharks wooed exhibitors at last week’s Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid and will now take it to RioMarket, the AFM and Film Baazar. Universal Pictures will release the film in Spain on Nov.

John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent SAN SEBASTIAN — Beta Fiction Spain, the distributor of the opening and closing films at this year’s San Sebastian Festival, Audrey Diwan’s “Emmanuelle” and John Crowley’s “We Live in Time,” has tapped Arantxa Echevarría to direct its banner Spanish feature, “Dolores.” Echeverría has already helmed for Beta Fiction “La Infiltrada,” about a police infiltrator in Basque terrorist org ETA, which bows Oct. 11 starring Luis Tosar and Carolina Yuste.

John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent In a deal sealed at Cannes, Spain’s Film Factory has closed France with Wild Bunch on action film “The Gentleman” as well as crime thriller “Undercover.” The directorial debut of seasoned Mexican cinematographer Luis Gabriel Beristáin (“Blade II,” “The Beekeeper”), “The Gentleman” stars Ron Perlman as Theo, an aging former U.S. soldier who pays Olga, a prostitute, to talk with him about who he once was and what he might have been. When Olga is brutally murdered, Theo embarks on bloody revenge.

Film Constellation has already reported sales to 50 territories on the original Spanish version.
