Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic “Harry Potter” has had many imitators, but none so blatant or irredeemably over-the-top as Netflix franchise starter “The School for Good and Evil,” an extravagant YA costume show from “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig that follows two friends to an elite academy where the heroes and villains of future fairy tales are trained. The whole idea derives from a book series by Soman Chainani, though it’s obvious where it really comes from: the imagination of J.K. Rowling, who must be positively livid watching what looks like the most expensive episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” ever produced. Feig goes full camp here, casting Kerry Washington and Charlize Theron to play the decked-out divas who oversee the enchanted institution’s two sides. The former embodies Professor Dovey, a prissy headmistress in Tweety Bird-yellow threads, who’s always going on about the rules, while Theron’s evil-minded Lady Lesso takes her fashion cues from Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS. Joined by Laurence Fishburne (as the Morpheus-like School Master), Michelle Yeoh (largely wasted as some kind of beauty instructor) and Cate Blanchett (in voice only, as the film’s self-aware narrator), these stars have been given carte blanche to chew the scenery.

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur has gotten an early Season 2 renewal. Disney Branded Television has ordered a second season of the animated series ahead of its Feb. 10 premiere. The animated show debuts first Disney Channel and shortly thereafter on Disney+. The news, along with a clip from the theme song, “Moon Girl Magic,” written and produced by executive music producer Raphael Saadiq and performed by series star Diamond White (voice of Lunella aka Moon Girl), was revealed today during the series’ panel at New York Comic Con.

Jackson, Laurence Fishburne, Whoopi Goldberg and Zendaya are just some of the stars who appear in Elvis Mitchell’s “Is That Black Enough for You?” Netflix documentary. Mitchell’s doc bows this weekend at the New York Film Festival. Mitchell, a film critic who has written for LA Weekly and The New York Times takes on the role of writer, director and narrator as he traces the history of Black representation in cinema. The documentary examines Black cultural achievement in the 1960s and ’70s and debunks the notion that Black cinema in that period only meant Blaxploitation films.

Director Kevin Bray is cementing his relationship with FX.

BreAnna Bell Kevin Bray has inked a first-look deal with FX productions, the production company announced on Thursday. As part of the agreement, Bray will be developing new content for FX. The deal further expands Bray’s relationship with FX. Bray directed the first three episodes of FX’s “The Patient” as well as several episodes of “The Americans” and “Snowfall.” In partnership with Color Force, Bray will also executive produce and direct on “The Sterling Affairs,” FX’s limited series about the downfall of Los Angeles Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling starring Laurence Fishburne, Ed O’Neill and Jacki Weaver. “We’ve been fortunate to work with Kevin on some of FX’s most acclaimed series and he’s a gifted artist with the skills to create series of his own,” said Nick Grad, FX’s president of original programming. “Kevin’s a wildly accomplished director and producer whose latest work on The Patient is among his best and will be on display in The Sterling Affairs and the projects he develops in the future for FX.”

Megalopolis.The actor has been cast in an undisclosed lead role in the forthcoming feature, per Giant Freakin’ Robot.The film shoot is set to begin this autumn, and alongside LaBeouf the film stars Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Voight, Aubrey Plaza and more.A logline for Megalopolis reads: “The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems in this epic story of political ambition, genius and conflicted love.”Meanwhile, Shia LaBeouf recently admitted the depiction of his father as an abusive man in the film Honey Boy was “fucking nonsense”.The 2019 film, which was written by LaBeouf, was said to be based on his his relationship with his father, whom he portrayed in the movie.“Here’s a man who I’ve done vilified on a grand scale,” the actor said (via The Independent). “I wrote this narrative, which was just fucking nonsense.“My dad was so loving to me my whole life.

Shia LaBeouf will be starring in Francis Ford Coppola's star-studded independent film Megalopolis after becoming embroiled in a dispute with Olivia Wilde over his departure from her latest film, Don't Worry Darling.  LaBeouf, 36, is among several of the newest stars to join the cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In addition to him, Coppola's sister Talia Shire and nephew Jason Schwartzman have also landed roles in the movie.The film will be independently financed by the legendary director, and has a budget just shy of $100 million.

Parks and Recreation actress Aubrey Plaza has found her next starring role in Hollywood legend Francis Ford Coppola's new movie Megalopolis. The highly-anticipated project is independently financed by Coppola from his own script and will follow an architect trying to rebuild New York City as his idealistic utopia in the wake of a tragic disaster. Deadline reports it is unclear precisely what role Plaza will play in the movie, but she joins a star-studded cast that includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight and Laurence Fishburne.

FX has rounded out the cast of The Sterling Affairs, its limited series about the downfall of LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling amid the team’s drive to win a championship under coach Doc Rivers. Cleopatra Coleman (Dopesick) has been tapped to star as Sterling’s mistress V. Stiviano.
