Tom Cruise buys her a new pair of shoes every year for her birthday.The actor starred alongside Cruise in the 2005 Steven Spielberg film War of the Worlds, when she was just 11 years old.Fanning played Rachel, the daughter of Cruise’s Ray Ferrier, a dock worker who must protect his family and reunite them when extraterrestrials invade Earth and devastate cities with giant war machines.Nearly 20 years may have passed since the film was made, but it seems that the two have remained in contact, with the Top Gun star going out of his way to treat her every February 23.Fanning appeared on Kelly Clarkson’s talk show this week, where she discussed the tradition.“He always sends me the same thing every year,” Fanning said. “I loved shoes when I was little, and I started to be able to fit into really small adult shoes when I was on the War of the Worlds press tour, so I was really excited about them.
