A director behind the Despicable Me franchise opened up about creating live-action adaptations of the animated movies.

Despicable Me franchise still shows no signs of slowing down.The last film was Despicable Me 4, which became the fourth highest-grossing film of 2024 ahead of Wicked and Dune: Part Two. The sequel was directed by Chris Renaud, who co-directed the first two movies with Pierre Coffin.Aside from the scene-stealing minions, the film’s are synonymous with Steve Carell’s performance as Gru.

Illumination and Universal’s Despicable Me 4 handily crossed the six-century mark at the global box office this week, now with $632M through Thursday. The latest in the series has pushed the worldwide running total for the Despicable Me/Minions franchise to $5.3B, overtaking Transformers ($5.295B) and the Avatar movies ($5.268B). This puts the franchise at No. 12 on the all-time global chart.

The addition of a biological son to a family of three adopted daughters (not to mention a platoon of unmanageable Minions) would be plot enough for “Despicable Me 4,” but whatever drama the new kid might cause goes underexamined in Illumination’s overstuffed sequel.
