Despicable Me franchise still shows no signs of slowing down.The last film was Despicable Me 4, which became the fourth highest-grossing film of 2024 ahead of Wicked and Dune: Part Two.
The sequel was directed by Chris Renaud, who co-directed the first two movies with Pierre Coffin.Aside from the scene-stealing minions, the film’s are synonymous with Steve Carell’s performance as Gru.
Other cast members in the fourth instalment include Kristen Wiig, Will Ferrell, Joey King, Sofia Vergara, and Stephen Colbert.The franchise has spawned two prequel spin-offs in 2015’s Minions and its sequel, Minions: The Rise Of Gru.At the time of writing, Universal and Illumination have not officially announced a sequel to Despicable Me 4.
Based on the fourth film’s box office performance though ($971million against a budget of $100million), a sequel is practically inevitable.Speaking to Variety in July 2024, director Chris Renaud teased the possibility of another sequel. “If we come up with a good story and it feels like we can cover some fresh territory, then certainly it’s possible,’ he said.As Despicable Me 5 hasn’t been officially announced, there is no release date yet.
