Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Here we are, three weeks into January, and the Sundance Film Festival has delivered what promises to be the year’s most uncomfortable date movie: a grubby New York-set fable about a facially distinctive actor (modeled on Adam Pearson) who undergoes an experimental procedure that leaves him looking like Sebastian Stan — presumably an improvement, until he realizes that under the skin, he’s still the same miserable loser. The kind of oddball satire only indie studio A24 would dare to produce, Aaron Schimberg’s “A Different Man” asks what it means to be “normal,” and whether, if we could wave a magic wand and “correct” those qualities that set us apart, that’s really something we’d want.

A Different Man tackles weighty themes of disability, identity, and transformation. Directed and written by Aaron Schimberg and starring Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, and Adam Pearson, what emerges is a complex portrayal of the clashes between outer perceptions and inner truths and makes valiant efforts towards inclusion to express a vital message about appearance and identity, but the execution can often feel tonally inconsistent, and overlong.Edward (Stan) is an aspiring actor with facial deformities (neurofibromatosis, to be exact), that subjects him to ridicule and isolation. Though self-conscious and lonely, Edward finds hope when he befriends Ingrid (Reinsve), his empathetic, playwright, next door neighbor. When presented with the possibility of normalcy through a risky reconstructive procedure, Edward pursues the chance to lead a life free from judgment and staring eyes.

The A24 film stars Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve and Adam Pearson in a tale of an actor who has facial reconstruction surgery and must come to terms with the fact that a theater role based on his life is given to another actor. During the screening, the Sundance audience was rapt with attention at the twisty script, which included a strange and kinky sex scene that left people squirming in their seats, as well as some realistic gore that earned yelps from the audience.

Lord Alan Sugar.The Apprentice boss has said he was "now always looking over my shoulder" after three anti-Semitic letters were sent to him, with one saying “I would like to murder all f***ing Jews in Britain, Alan”.The letters, with the address typed and stuck to the front, were opened by Lord Sugar's assistant at his company and referred to the police.Patrick Gomes, 70, has denied sending the letters but was found guilty at an earlier trial of religiously aggravated harassment, putting those targeted in fear of violence.He was jailed for three years and six months at Chelmsford Crown Court on Wednesday and was handed an indefinite restraining order not to contact Lord Sugar.Adam Pearson, prosecuting, said that one of the letters said there was “no anti-Semitic element within the Labour Party” then “went onto say the author of the letter was a Jew hater”.previously thanked police in Essex for “helping to shine a light on the fact that this type of behaviour is simply not acceptable” after the man was found guilty.Gomes sent three letters to one of Lord Sugar’s businesses in Loughton between October and December 2018, Essex Police said, which contained anti-semitic abuse.Each letter was addressed directly to Lord Sugar and included abusive, threatening and offensive language, with them being derogatory towards the Jewish religion.Gomes was arrested at his home on March 19, 2019 after his DNA and fingerprints were found on one of the letters.Officers then found other discriminatory letters by Gomes, and the address they were sent to in his address book.There's MUCH more where that came from! fraudster who conned the Lottery out of £2.5 million with a fake ticket faces six more years in prison unless he hands over what is left of his ill-gotten gains.Edward Putman, 56, is set to lose a house and land in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, where he had planned to build an hotel.The former bricklayer has been ordered to hand over his assets, valued at £939,782.44, within three months or face further years added to the nine year sentence he is already serving.Putman was found guilty in October 2019 of using a forged winning ticket to claim the jackpot in 2009 after a lottery insider spilled details of the scam.In a Proceeds of Crime hearing at St Albans Crown Court today, prosecutor Adam Pearson said the benefit Putman had obtained from the fraud was £2,525,495 and the available amount for confiscation was £939,782.44.His barrister Lawrence Selby said: "Mr Putman does not accept or agree the benefit figure or realisable assets, but will not be contesting these proceedings. "Judge Philip Grey said he will give a formal ruling later, but would impose a further six years in prison if the money was paid within three months.The house that is due to be taken, which is close to the M25, currently stands in a scruffy, unkempt state with curtains drawn shut.
