Olympics chiefs fear Tokyo Games may not take place next year

Olympic chiefs have admitted there is uncertainty over whether the postponed Tokyo Games will be able to go ahead next summer.

The Japanese capital was due to host the Olympics this summer but that has been postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Instead, the Games are due to begin on July 23 next summer however there are doubts as to whether the COVID-19 outbreak will be under control by then.

Organising committee CEO Toshiro Muto said: “I don’t think anyone would be able to say if it is going to be possible to get it under control by next July or not. “We’re certainly not in a position to give you a clear answer. “We have made the decision to postpone the Games by one year.
