Booker Prize for his debut Shuggie Bain. The First Minister congratulated Stuart after judges unanimously crowned him this year's winner this evening.
The 44-year-old was announced as the winner of the prize in a virtual ceremony which featured contributions from former US president Barack Obama and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Sturgeon tweeted: "I’m so thrilled for @Doug_D_Stuart - Shuggie Bain is a raw, searing and beautifully tender novel."Such a worthy winner of @TheBookerPrizes - and he now joins James Kelman as one of just two Scottish writers to win the prize.
