Four single mothers are to take the DWP to court accusing them of child maintenance failures they claim have left them in "poverty" and turning to food banks.

The group of women say they want to "challenge the persistent failure" of the Child Maintenance Service (CMS), which is designed to support single parents when families split up.

The four women, from Yorkshire, London, Surrey and the North West, claim they are owed payments of between £2,000 and £8,000 dating back a number of years.

The DWP said no one could duck support payments by providing false information and anyone found to be abusing the system could be prosecuted in court.
