Pictures from the scene show a section of Southgate, behind Kendals off Deansgate, cordoned off. It's thought the man, in his 40s, fell from the nearby King Street car park.
A passing police patrol was alerted to the incident by paramedics at around 8.45pm on Friday. Despite the medics' best efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
