Manchester City have come a long way over the past 14 years thanks to the money of Sheikh Mansour. Yesterday, City announced the signing of Borussia Dortmund Erling Haaland, one of the most exciting young players in world football for £51million.
The transfer is just the latest in a long line of such deals in the Sheikh Mansour era. A recent report by the CIES Football Observatory estimated City have spent over £1.4bn on transfers since 2012 – the most of any club in the world.
That is the modern era of City, the one defined by the billionaire and deputy Prime Minister of Abu Dhabi. Before then came a very different era of the club.
Sheikh Mansour has been the owner of Man City since September 2008.Before him came former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
