Oldham Street was cordoned off by police on Saturday afternoon following an incident at nearby Piccadilly Gardens. Pictures from the scene showed what appeared to be blood-soaked garments on the pavement.
Police patrols have been stepped up and an investigation is underway. Greater Manchester Police has updated local councillors about the incident.
