Jockey, 59, wins first ever race 40 years on from making horse racing debut

The amateur, who works as a healthcare assistant by day, had never finished better than third in his long career.But his fortunes finally changed at Kilbeggan, Ireland, while riding Eat The Book as the pair secured their first ever win.

The horse, a David Dunne-trained nine-year-old, completed a miraculous sporting feat himself, having nearly been put down in his younger days after injuring himself badly.The combination were ruled out at odds of 40-1 with a circuit to go.

But their fortunes quickly changed as they passed several rivals and avoided a melee three out.They were alongside serial winner Mark Walsh and A Different World at the last jump, but it was the underdog duo that hit the front and eased clear to win by five-and-a-half lengths.

An ecstatic Condon told RacingTV after his win: “I’ve been waiting a long time for this. It’s hard to describe the feeling. Normally when I ride, there are always horses in front of me.
