Jade Thirlwall has recalled the ‘horrific’ racial bullying she encountered at school – while also revealing she kept her heritage a secret when she joined Little Mix out of fear of being less ‘popular’.
The singer’s maternal grandfather is from Yemen and her maternal grandmother is from Egypt, while her father is white, with the star saying she was ‘bullied quite badly’ at school due to the colour of her skin.
Saying she ‘wasn’t very proud’ of who she was, the 27-year-old singer – who performs alongside Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jesy Nelson and Perrie Edwards in the girl group – kept her heritage to herself when she auditioned for X Factor in 2011, where she eventually went on to join Little Mix.
