Irish bloke stuck near nuclear plant bombed by Putin says wife 'doesn't want to leave'

The move reportedly saw the Russians take control of the city, amid worries of how damage to the nuclear facilities might cause damage akin to – or even greater than – the Chernobyl disaster.Authorities have said that the facility is safe and has normal radiation levels.Niall, who is Irish but was born in Chelmsford in the UK, lives nearby in the city with his Ukrainian wife and two young children.

Calling in to Nick Ferrari’s show on LBC, he described how the attack had impacted his family.Niall began by explaining that Russian forces had been in the area for a while, and were met with “passive resistance” where locals simply stood in front of tanks and refused to move.But the situation escalated last night when Putin’s army began shelling the nuclear plant.“In the middle of the night they attacked the actual power station, which is completely nuts,” Niall said.Hiding in a basement, Niall described how he couldn’t quite hear the explosions but they were still close enough to the plant that their group’s first response to the news was to try to “find a geiger counter” — the equipment that measures local radiation levels.Thankfully, Niall explained that they had realised that it was only an administrative building that had caught fire, but not before they had spent an agonising three hours waiting to find out whether they might be subject to radiation poisoning.To get more Ukraine stories from Daily Star delivered straight to your inbox sign up to one of our free newsletters here.Explaining why he had remained in the danger zone, Niall said: “My wife is from here, and my children are here.
