Inter Milan goalkeeper Ionut Radu has been compared to Peter Enckelman after recreating the former Aston Villa goalkeeper’s infamous howler.Radu is the talk of Serie A after his barely believable blunder cost defending champions Inter dear in a must-win league match against Bologna on Wednesday night.
Inter needed to win their rearranged game in hand to go top of the league, but found themselves tied at 1-1 late on after Ivan Perisic’s early screamer was cancelled out by Marko Arnautovic’s glancing header.Lautaro Martinez, Denzel Dumfries and Joaquin Correa all missed chances, while Lukasz Skorupski made a few saves to keep Bologna in it before disaster struck for Inter in the 81st minute in the most innocuous fashion.
Perisic’s throw-in by his own corner flag was the unlikely source of a goal for the hosts’ striker Nicola Sansone.Perisic tried to get play moving quickly by throwing the ball back to his goalkeeper, but Radu somehow contrived to send the ball towards his goal with an ungainly swipe of his left foot.
Rather than let it trickle over the line Sansone gleefully tucked it in before celebrating wildly a goal which left Inter’s bitter rivals, AC Milan, two points clear at the top of Serie A with four games remaining. For one viewer, the gaff reminded him of Enckelman’s classic for Villa in a derby against Birmingham City in September 2002, when he let Olaf Melberg’s throw-in slip underneath his foot and into the net. “Peter Enckleman's back playing,” wrote one commenter on Twitter.HAVE YOUR SAY!
