How to calm down sensitive skin

Trinny Woodall revealed that 20 per cent of her customers complained of sensitive skin, 11 per cent suffer with rosacea and 6 per cent have easily irritated skin.In reality, it’s a bigger story. “Recent research has found 52 per cent of women now claim to have sensitive skin, while 85 per cent of people describe having an episode of sensitivity at some point in their life,” says dermatologist Dr Justine Hextall.So what are we doing to compromise our complexion?

Are we so stressed it’s causing our skin barrier to literally “crack” under the pressure? Is that afternoon coffee or post-work glass of wine leaving our epidermis as dry and dehydrated as the Gobi desert?

Have we become so ingredient-obsessed that our skin has finally decided enough is enough? Or were we just born with it?It turns out it could be all or any of the above. “Increasingly, more of the world’s population is experiencing sensitivity.

That includes those genetically predisposed to sensitive skin and those who have acquired it,” explains Victoria Evans, the education lead for Dermalogica. “The impact of stress and pollution, foods that cause inflammation, plus the wearing of face coverings during the pandemic has exacerbated the problem.”According to Evans, sensitive skin comes in many guises. “It can feel hot or flush regularly, leading to prolonged redness with permanently dilated capillaries (tiny red blood vessels under the skin), or it may feel tingly or sting when certain products are applied or after exposure to particular environments and time outdoors.“Sensitive skin will also typically feel dry or tight and may flake or feel rough due to the lack of lipids in the protective barrier layer,” she says.
