How red lipstick helped win World War Two

“Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick and pull yourself together,” said Elizabeth Taylor. The idea of lipstick as the fourth emergency service first emerged during the Second World War when the British government decided not to ration it.

Not long before, lipstick had been considered louche and unrespectable. It was only in the 1920s that flappers turned it into a badge of independence.

The decision to keep lipstick production going was enlightened psychology on the part of the all-male war cabinet. That doesn’t mean lipstick was easy to come by.

The metal of the outer casings was redirected to munitions factories and in Blighty, colours were extremely limited but nonetheless treasured and used right down to the stub.
