Groundbreaking 'jumping robot' based on kids' toy could spark new wave of robotics

A new breed of "soft" robots being developed at Harvard University points the way to a future where robots can jump and negotiate complex unfamiliar terrain even better than we can.

The disc-shaped “foot” the Harvard researchers are developing is inspired by a familiar child’s toy. The “sole” of the foot is normally flat but a short sharp burst of air or fluid inflates it to spring the robot into the air. "This actuator is a building block that could be integrated into a fully soft robotic system to give soft robots that can already crawl, walk and swim the ability to jump," explained Professor Katia Bertoldi, the lead author of a paper on the research.
